HOW WE TRAIN
Yuen Kay San Wing Chun
Yuan Kay San Wing Chun is a large and eclectic sub-style of Wing Chun that is equal parts sophisticated and savagery. The style was created by Sum Neng who studied under two different teachers. His first teacher Chueng Bo was a large man, a dim sum chief, whose Wing Chun was made of dozens of individual techniques and combos called sansik. Chueng Bo’s Wing Chun was simple, direct and powerful which gave Sum Neng a foundation in brawling. His second teacher Yuan Kay San was a wealthy gentleman who had studied Wing Chun from a young age. Yuan Kay San’s Wing Chun was a complex and subtle art which taught Sum Neng the intricacies of controlling and subduing opponents. Sum Neng named his Wing Chun after his second teacher but he never forgot the foundation in strong basics given to him by Chueng Bo. To give his own students a similar practical foundation he organized a set of twelve essential techniques for using Wing Chun called the Sup Yi Sik, which are the treasure of this style.
Guangzhou City Bak Mei
Rooted or on the move, inside or outside of the pocket, Bak Mei asks the student a single question: “What if you could have hit even harder?” Through the study of different power generation methods the student of Bak Mei learns to maximize their punching power while moving in any direction, in any stance. This sub-style of Bak Mei distinguishes itself in being perfectly poised to meet the demands of either sport fighting, self-defense, or self-cultivation. The elders of the Guangzhou Bak Mei sub style prioritized simplicity and functionality in an era of modern Chinese history in which its students had to fight to protect themselves.
