GRANT BROWN
Grant Brown is a Chinese language teacher, Family Therapist and Iowa City native. He graduated from City High School in 1999; did his undergraduate studies in Chinese Language Culture and his graduate degree in foreign language education at the University of Iowa. From 1998 to 2005 he studied Moy Yat Ving Tsun Kung Fu. During that period he actively cross-trained in other martial arts styles including Jeet Kuen Do under Bruce Elgin, Contemporary Wushu under Liam Hua, and Tai Chi under various teachers. From 2005 to 2007 he moved to China and intensively studied Yuen Kay San Wing Chun under Chen Gwan Ling. In 2006 he helped Chen Sifu by coaching the Zhong Kai University student branch of his Wing Chun association. That year he also participated in the first international close-quarters boxing competition in Fat San. Between 2007 and 2011 he trained a small group of students in Yuen Kay San Wing Chun in Iowa City. In 2011 he returned to China and began his training in Bak Mei under Chan Man Cheung. In 2012 he received first place in the adult men’s traditional southern boxing forms event at the GuangDong provincial martial arts competition and 2nd place prizes in the 2013 provincial competition for empty hand and weapons forms. In 2015 he co-founded Iowa City Kung Fu, with the help of his friend and Gulao Pinsun Wing Chun expert Rob Weingeist, to spread his love of Southern Chinese martial arts.
